AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The White House announced that today, Friday, it has submitted the fiscal year 2027 budget bill to Congress, which includes U.S. defense spending of $1.5 trillion—a figure that is 42 percent higher than the current year.
The White House explained that this increase represents another historic growth in the U.S. defense budget, equivalent to a $445 billion increase.
In contrast to this increase, the budget bill envisions a $73 billion reduction in U.S. non-military spending, which is equivalent to a 10 percent decrease.
Additionally, the priorities for next year’s budget in the U.S. military sector have been outlined, including the restoration of U.S. naval superiority. In this regard, funds have been allocated for the construction of 123 vessels to meet the needs of the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security.
This measure constitutes the largest annual increase in U.S. military spending since the end of World War II to date, placing missile defense programs at the forefront of the administration's priorities. Within this framework, funding has been allocated for the so-called "Golden Dome" program at a cost of approximately $185 billion.
This budget also includes F-35 fighter jets, Lockheed Martin warships, and Virginia-class submarines built by General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls.
Last year, Trump had requested a defense budget of $892.6 billion, and then, with the addition of a supplemental budget of approximately $150 billion, brought total U.S. defense spending to over one trillion dollars for the first time in history.
He had promised during his election campaign to balance the U.S. budget within five years, but by the end of his first presidential term, he had added approximately $7.8 trillion to the U.S. public debt - an issue that has now placed his financial plans under scrutiny by investors and policymakers.
